"First Homebrew Attempt" or "Worst Disaster Ever"

You're going to love this one.

I really have no clue what I'm doing, as far as homebrewing goes. I got a starter kit, and read the instructions in the kit. I got an ingredients kit, and read the instructions in that. I got "The Joy of Home Brewing", and read that. I read some stuff online. I still didn't really "get" everything, but I figured I'd give it a try. Papazian has a way of making everything seem pretty simple, so I figured, what's the worst that could happen.

I made sure to sanitize everything extra well yesterday. I boiled everything like the instructions said. Added the ingredients together, set it up to ferment, and went to bed.

The next morning:

The apartment really stinks like bad beer... but I don't know if that's just part of the process, so I ignore it. I get out of bed, and go into the kitchen. What do I find? BEER EVERYWHERE. Well, technically, wort everywhere... but yeah. My floor was covered; it shot up and got all over the ceiling, and rained down on my cabinets. It spread out to under my refrigerator. My copy of "The Joy of Homebrewing" was destroyed in the flood.

So... I'm assuming I did something wrong here...

I pitched the yeast in a batch of Bitters last night, and this morning it was fermenting something fierce. Now I come home this evening and its gone very still. Where as the air lock was constantly streaming gas before, its releasing it about every 10 seconds now. The foam has all sunk back into the brew as well.

Is this bad? Has anyone ever experienced this before?

Thank you in advance!
